5 Strategies to Avoid “Speech Fatigue” ™

by | May 31, 2016

Karen Cortell Reisman Executive Communication Speaker & Coach tedious speech picLearn from a recent Harvard graduation speech that’s gone viral. Donovan Livingston, a master’s graduate at the university, speaks at the School of Education’s convocation last week.

Question: Why did his speech garner 5 million online views?

  1. Be Unique – Livingston uses clever rhyme to make his points clear.
  1. Be Authentic – He speaks from his heart and experience.
  1. Be Dynamic – Livingston has a manuscript BUT he is NOT reading it! He is conversational, has great posture, facial expressions congruent with his message and fabulous eye contact with his audience.
  1. Keep it Short – He understands the power of Less is More.
  1. Make it Sticky – Livingston uses analogies, stories and metaphors. Data tells. Emotion (via his story) sells.

Use these techniques and your listeners will not only stay awake, but will be inspired by your words.
